The subject of the project was to expand the existing WWTP for the town of Stará Ľubovňa and adjacent municipalities Nová Ľubovňa, Jakubany and Jarabina. The new WWTP Stará Ľubovňa has a capacity of 25 000 PE.

WWTP Stará Ľubovňa is a mechanical and biological WWTP with nutrient elimination and chemical precipitation of phosphorus. The sludge treatment includes sludge anaerobic stabilization with the use of produced biogas for the needs of the plant.

The mechanical treatment consists of coarse screens, fine screens, sand trap, sand separator and primary sedimentation tank. Rainwater is redirected into the recipient after the mechanical pre-treatment prior to biological treatment.

Biological treatment consists of denitrification, nitrification and aerobic sludge regeneration

Phosphorus elimination is ensured by chemical coagulation using a solution of ferric sulfate

Sludge treatment is made of a sludge anaerobic stabilization tank operated in mesophilic conditions, mechanical thickening of spare sludge from the biological treatment and dewatering of anaerobic stabilized sludge. Sludge anaerobic stabilization tanks are also stirred pneumatically using gas compressors powered by biogas in addition to hydraulic stirring.

In gas management, the produced biogas is accumulated in a dry double-membrane gasholder in anaerobic stabilization tanks. The gasholder consists of two membranes made of highly resistant polyester texture coated with PVC. Biogas is mainly used for producing electricity and the produced heat for heating of the sludge in anaerobic sludge stabilization tank. Heat used for heating up the buildings in the winter is produced in boiler rooms from biogas. Spare biogas is burned on the biogas burner.

Measurement and regulation of main technological processes is ensured mainly by on-line ammonia nitrogen measurements, nitrate nitrogen, soluble oxygen and phosphates directly in the biological stage or in the treated waste water on the outlet of the WWTP.
